Q.
How do I know what is better? Individual or group
psychotherapy?
A. Each one has its advantages. Group therapy offers
the perspective of others that may be facing similar situations
as you. Each person in a group therapy situation agrees to
respect the confidentiality of the issues discussed in the
sessions. This form of therapy is also more economical, and
some people prefer it because they can learn from other group
members without having to talk during the whole session. Individual
therapy is more focused and can be more intense. It is also
more personal.
Q.
What about couples counseling?
A.
Oftentimes people engage in patterns of communication that
are ineffective, and the root of other problems in the relationship.
Couples counseling helps people to have better communication
and increase the intimacy when both individuals are committed
to better the relationship. On other occasions, couples come
to counseling to be helped to separate in an amicable way,
and to deal with their children and families after the separation
takes place.
Q.
What is a psychological evaluation?
A.
A psychological evaluation usually consists of a clinical
interview, a mental status examination and the administration
of standardized instruments (mostly paper and pencil tests)
that measure intellectual ability, memory, personality and
other factors. The evaluations or assessments are usually
conducted to answer a question from the referral source. A
report is written to summarize the findings, and usually a
feedback session is scheduled to discuss the results with
the patient. Before any assessment or evaluation is initiated,
the patient is explained the purpose of the evaluation, any
limits in confidentiality, and the methods to be used. For
further information, please see the American Psychological
Association's site entitled Psychological
Testing of Language Minority and Culturally Different Children.
